Exploring Grakn for Knowledge Graphs and Capability Analysis

Thank you Phil T.. This is a good introduction for me. I am thinking of using Grakn for this and building a knowledge graph based on the OMG group’s VDML and SMM models. This is all still gut feel stuff since I have little experience with this. Still, conceptually, it looks like a viable option if I want to build a system for capability analysis and the best “route” for value creation. My question was whether I could start modelling a schema straight from the OMG model or whether I have to do a p.hd in ontology first before I attempted that. Your picture however helped me see how the elements fit together. Thats great!

Andre Olivier You are asking important questions, Andre! Without them Phil T. would probably not have posted the very useful graphic (which I very much would like to share on, Phil, if you allow). So thank you for asking! - Coming from the world of OWL & Co within the offshore sector myself, I remember very well the pain that is attached to using it within a concrete business context with business people, even though they held PhDs in drilling or material sciences or fluid mechanics (fields that I find way more complex than building ontologies). So for me, the biggest value of graph thinking and graph technology is that you do not need a PhD in Logic to understand and use its concepts. I think it is because it is much closer to the way our brains work in their hardwires, regardless of what educational background we have.

Andre Olivier No worries. I have learned more from 20 years in the industry than from my years as a PhD-student... :-)

Veronika Haderlein-Høgberg et-al. You are free to share. I added a permissible license to the attached to keep legal teams happy, wherever that is deemed important.

Andre Olivier the good news is that when it comes to modelling in Grakn, building your schema, a PHD is absolutely NOT needed. (I work at Grakn Labs) It is one of the more intuitive modelling languages as someone without a PHD. Have you started on it yet? Happy to lend a eye/ear.
