Commented on Favourite KG (non-tech) beginner book? 📚·Posted inAsk

Hi, daria. Although it’s a bit long in the tooth, I think Segaran, et al.’s Programming the Semantic Web has a lot of great beginner material (one can ignore all of the Python code and still get a lot out of the book). This book also looks promising, although I’ve not yet read it. There are of course many great books on KG/linked data/semantic web, but they’re, by and large, not aimed at the beginner….

Robert R. Assuming you also took symbolic logic courses as part of your degree, they along with your (assumed) ontology and epistemology coursework would seem to make you a good candidate for ontology development work. Have you had experience or training in OWL, SPARQL, and other semantic web technologies? Are you considering PhD programs other than philosophy? (Library and Information Science [my last degree] might also be worth considering....)

Hi, Rijul V. I may have a contact for you--let me check with them. On a mostly-unrelated note, though, do you have experience with Karma?

Juan S.: Wondering if you might have anything to add to this thread as authors you've mentioned/collaborated with in the past (e.g., Hogan et al.) have written about cyclic blank node structures, which is is essentially what I'm asking about (though I should note that I'm beginning to wonder if my question is more properly one of Turtle-specific syntax...).

Michael G. Thanks for your def'n of skolemization. Armed with it, this, and this, I get it--one is simply replacing blank nodes new, globally unique IRIs.

(Love your product by the way--the visualization capabilities within Studio are incredibly helpful and useful.)

Michael G. Re: "skolemization," I've only been doing semantic web work in earnest since April, and don't have formal training in symbolic logic. I came across this definition, which I'm afraid doesn't help me much: "Skolemization is the replacement of strong quantifiers in a sequent by fresh function symbols, where a strong quantifier is a positive occurrence of a universal quantifier or a negative occurrence of an existential quantifier" (so something to do with removing the upside-down A's and negated backwards E's from a formulation :-) Can you perhaps offer a less formal definition, one that's within the context of blank nodes/URI creation? Thank you.
