Hello, I am material scientist at MIT working on creating a knowledge graph of materials. I am new to ontologies and the semantic web in general. I would like to understand ontologies/taxonomies and what an ontologist/taxonomist does in general. Would someone in this channel be able to talk with me for 30 minutes while I ask you some questions about your work? Please feel free to DM me to set up a time. Thanks so much!
Hi Vineeth, nice to meet you, Though I am not myself an ontologist nor a taxonomist (just a PhD student working in the field) I would be happy to exchange if you feel like it. In the meantime I can suggest a few names here:
Heather H. (you can start with her book or blog: https://www.hedden-information.com/)
Dean A. (you can start with his book also https://dl.acm.org/doi/book/10.1145/3382097)
They are just two, but there many others around here. Also, as you mentioned a KG of materials, have you checked EMMO (https://emmc.eu/news/emmo-new-name-and-logo/)? I hope it helps
I’d be happy to talk (sent you a DM with details). Also, another good place to post this ask is the “Taxonomy Talk” discord forum (https://discord.gg/v8Dsy7xJ) that Heather H. moderates.
vineeth v. during KGC we created an “ask the ontologists” channel with our leading domain experts in this space. I’ve just added you and Matthias S.
Thank you, Thomas!
vineeth v. This paper has some interesting applications of RDF, SPARQL, and OWL to materials science: http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-2523/paper32.pdf
