Here is also the Miro board we put together in our workshop at KGC2022 on Tuesday. We had three warm-up questions:

  1. 1.

How do you make your modelling decisions?

  2. 2.

How do you name your properties?

  3. 3.

How do you decide whether your concept is in the ontology or on the instance/taxonomy level?

After the warm-up questions we took a brief Q/A session, the chance for juniors to finally ask a room full of ontologists a question. We then moved on to discussing support that ontologists are getting and lacking. Finally, we ideated what we could do to strengthen our community.

There was a session (ended just now) on: Taxonomy driven Ontology design. Wouldn't some of your questions above get answered? Though not detailed discussion on standards but some pointers were mentioned.

Neena D. The above questions are ones for which there is no agreed-upon “right answer” - there are practices people follow (sometimes with great conviction!) but those practices are somewhat diverse, and the warm-up questions served to get us talking.

Jeff L. Aha..... the best answer of all! 'It depends......'. Totally agree with your point, however, that is when standards come to play a big role. Howsoever the practice is fluid, an organization still needs to move forward in a predictable and consistent manner and standards would help in doing so. I thought today's session highlighted 'how' part of this topic - although not too detailed. (or I might have read a little too much into it?)
